Yes, Pai Canyon (Kong Lan) is absolutely worth visiting — it is one of the most dramatic natural viewpoints in northern Thailand and one of Pai’s signature attractions. That said, it does come with some real safety considerations that you should be aware of before you go.
What to expect
Pai Canyon is a series of narrow sandstone ridges that jut out from a hillside, with steep drop-offs of 30 meters or more on either side. The main trail from the car park takes about 15-30 minutes to walk, depending on how far along the ridges you go and how many photos you stop to take. The landscape looks almost otherworldly — eroded orange-red earth against a backdrop of green jungle stretching to the mountains. Entry is free.
Safety
There are no guardrails, fences, or safety ropes along the ridges. The paths narrow to less than a meter in some places, with sheer drops on both sides. The sandstone surface can be slippery, especially after rain or in the early morning dew. People have been injured here, and fatal falls have occurred. If you have a fear of heights or vertigo, the narrow ridge sections will be very uncomfortable and you should stick to the wider viewpoints near the start of the trail. Wear shoes with good grip — flip-flops are a bad idea. Keep children close.
Best time to visit
Sunset is the most popular time, and for good reason — the light turns the canyon walls golden and the valley below glows. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot and walk the trail in daylight. Sunrise is equally beautiful and far less crowded, though you will need to ride out in the dark. Midday visits are fine for photography but the heat can be punishing, and there is zero shade on the ridges.
Practical details
The canyon is located about 8 km south of Pai town on Route 1095 (the road to Chiang Mai). Look for the signed turnoff on the left. There is a small car park with a few food and drink vendors. Bring water — there is no shade on the trail and you will dehydrate quickly in the afternoon sun. The whole visit, including the drive, typically takes about 1-1.5 hours.
