Pai is a small town and nowhere is truly far from anything, but where you stay affects the feel of your trip. Accommodation ranges from ultra-budget bamboo huts to stylish boutique resorts, and the choice between staying in town or in the surrounding valley is the biggest decision.
Walking Street and town center
Staying near Walking Street puts you in the middle of the action — the night market, restaurants, bars, convenience stores, and booking agencies are all within a few minutes’ walk. This is the best area if you don’t plan to rent a motorbike or if you want easy access to nightlife. Expect to pay 300-600 THB for a basic fan room or guesthouse, and 800-1,500 THB for air-conditioned rooms with hot showers. The trade-off is more noise, especially on weekends.
Outskirts and the valley
Some of Pai’s most memorable stays are scattered along the roads leading out of town — bamboo bungalows surrounded by rice paddies, treehouse stays perched in the canopy, and small riverside resorts. These places offer peace, scenery, and a closer connection to nature. Prices range from 200-400 THB for a simple bamboo hut with a shared bathroom to 1,500-4,000 THB for a well-appointed bungalow with a private terrace and valley views. You will need a motorbike or bicycle to get into town, but distances are short (2-5 km).
Unique stays
Pai is famous for its quirky accommodation. Treehouse stays are exactly what they sound like — elevated wooden platforms in the trees with mattresses and mosquito nets. Several places along the road south of town offer these for 300-800 THB. Circus-themed hostels, converted shipping containers, and riverside glamping tents are also available. These are part of what makes Pai feel different from anywhere else in Thailand.
Booking advice
During peak season (December-January), the best places fill up fast. Book at least a week ahead on Booking.com or Agoda, or even further ahead for New Year’s Eve. In the low season, you can show up and walk around to negotiate in person — this often gets you a better rate than online prices. Always check for a motorbike rental deal bundled with your room.
